My Story: How I Found Freedom, Fulfillment, and the Life I Dreamed Of
By Mark Schnurman, Founder, The Perfect Franchise
One thing life has taught me is that many of us live remarkably similar stories. The details differ — the names, the companies, the titles — but the underlying arc is often the same. That’s why my story may sound familiar, even if our paths never crossed.
I built a strong career in corporate America. I rose through the ranks, expanded my responsibilities, earned more money, and became highly skilled at what I did. My confidence grew. My résumé looked great. My LinkedIn profile sparkled.
And yet, my unhappiness grew just as quickly.
I wasn’t the husband, father, friend, or person I wanted to be. I had spent years building a career that looked successful from the outside but felt empty on the inside. Long hours, limited independence, constant pressure, and the inefficiency of corporate life wore me down. Even when I switched industries — from financial services to real estate — the feeling never truly changed.
I wasn’t ungrateful. I just wasn’t fulfilled.
I had hit the intersection where professional success collides with personal melancholy. I knew the corporate world no longer aligned with my needs, but I couldn’t yet see a new path forward. And like many people, I convinced myself that another job might fix everything. But deep down, I knew better.
Climbing the Ladder… and Feeling Every Rung
As my career progressed, I led training, human resources, and sales teams. I made an excellent living. But something was always missing. I wanted freedom and autonomy — but I didn’t yet have the courage to pursue them.
Working for people whose values didn’t align with mine created a growing internal tension. It was uncomfortable, and eventually it became unbearable.
So I tried to fill the void outside my career.
I launched a career-coaching business.
I taught at the university level.
I wrote career articles for newspapers.
I needed to stretch, grow, and test the edges of my capabilities.
I even started running trail ultramarathons — not because I wanted medals, but because I wanted to understand what I was truly made of. Running allowed me to explore my limits and confront the discomfort that comes with growth. It also showed me something profound: I was only limited by my imagination and my willingness to step outside what was familiar.
Running became the opposite of corporate life. It was freeing, spiritual, challenging, and deeply personal. It reminded me of who I really was… and who I wanted to become.
Realizing I Needed Control — And the Turning Point
Eventually, I found myself more capable of running the business I worked for than the owners themselves. The performance and results made that obvious. I approached them and asked to become a partner. I didn’t care about the money — what I wanted was control over my professional destiny.
Negotiations began, but it quickly became clear that while they were willing to offer me partnership, they were unwilling to offer me control. It was an illusion of empowerment, not the real thing.
After years of trading my personal happiness, family time, identity, and independence for a high, predictable income, I realized I couldn’t keep doing it. I told them I was leaving. Only when they realized I might actually walk away did they make promises — promises I knew they would never keep.
Up to that point, I believed the story many professionals tell themselves:
“I need the security of a paycheck to provide for my family.”
That belief turned out to be false.
Three truths replaced it:
- I could generate income with my own business.
- I was sacrificing more by staying than I was gaining.
- While I was providing for my family financially, I was unhappy, unfulfilled.
I wanted to be a better person.
A happier person.
A person who lived up to his potential and values.
Another corporate job was never going to give me that.
So I did the thing everyone told me was either brave or insane:
I walked away from a high six-figure income without another “safe” job lined up.
It wasn’t courage or chaos — it was clarity.
Finding My Path: How Franchising Changed Everything
It wasn’t long before I discovered franchising — and with it, a path that removed the barriers I had once used as excuses: fear, inertia, uncertainty, lack of a business concept, and the weight of risk.
Franchising gave me structure, proven systems, marketing, operations support, technology, training — everything I needed to succeed without having to invent an entire business from scratch.
That support allowed me to step into entrepreneurship with confidence instead of dread.
And it worked.
I have owned or co-owned several successful franchise businesses.
I have never been happier professionally or personally.
The impact on my life has been profound:
- I’m a better husband, father, son, and friend.
- I’m happier — and I didn’t realize how unhappy I had been until I felt the contrast.
- I have no commute.
- I make decisions quickly and execute without layers of approval.
- I take pride in my work every single day.
- I have flexibility.
- I help people.
- And most importantly: I live on my terms.
My only regret is not making the transition sooner.
My story resonates because while each journey is unique, the underlying path toward business ownership is strikingly similar for many professionals: a search for meaning, control, autonomy, and a better life.
Key Takeaways
- Corporate success doesn’t guarantee fulfillment — many professionals feel stuck despite strong achievements.
- Personal happiness matters as much as financial stability, and often reveals itself only after stepping away from misaligned environments.
- Franchising lowers the barriers to entrepreneurship, offering proven systems and support.
- The desire for autonomy and control grows with experience, making mid-career a powerful time to explore ownership.
- Your story doesn’t have to follow the corporate script forever — alternatives exist, and they can lead to profound personal transformation.
